What a week the sports world had, new NHL Stanley Cup champions, repeat NBA champions and for a topper, the 13th Triple Crown winner. I know some of you may be saying there is tennis, soccer and other news in sports this week, but these are the three that are notable for me. Okay not that it’s a championship but Martin Truex won the NASCAR race in Pocono. Also of note, not that he was able to be present (he was in Michigan for a race), but Stafford Township’s Founder’s day was held and the theme was “Martin Truex – Celebrating Our Hometown Champion”. Members of Martin’s family were in the parade. Okay, let’s dig into more details.
Washington Capitals: Won the Stanley Cup for the first time in the team’s history with a 4-1 series win over the Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights, a first year expansion team, were a 500 to 1 bet at the beginning of the season. They fell one series short. Alex Ovechkin won the MVP. The other teams they defeated to get to the top were Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning. Congrats to all the Cap fans.
Golden State Warriors: Won the NBA Championship by bringing out the brooms with a 4-0 series sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers. These two teams faced each other last year and Golden State won the series in 5 games. From my perspective, and let me say that pro basketball is not an interest of mine except for the finals and even at that, I do not watch the games from start to finish, it is a team sport. God bless LeBron James and his talent but he can’t win by himself, even though he gave a try. Hats off to Golden State and their supporters, a couple of the games were closer than the scores reflected and it could have been a series tied at 2-2, but they pulled through at key times and defeated the Cavs. Kevin Durant won the MVP award.
Justify: The undefeated (second in history) Triple Crown winner went wire to wire at the Belmont Stakes. Having already won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness made him the 13th horse in history to do so. H was trained by Bob Baffert, who now has 2 Triple Crowns, having won in 2015 with American Pharoah and ridden by Mike Smith, a 52 year old jockey. After running in rain & mud in Louisville and mud & fog in Baltimore, Justify had a beautiful sunny day to shine his way into history.
Bonus info: Who was the other undefeated champion? Seattle Slew in 1977.
