Huge columns of smoke have been popping up around the state of NJ.  Is is time to panic? Armageddon?   Judgement Day?   The End of the World?

Nope!!  Actually its that time of the year when the NJ State Forest Fire and Fire Departments around the state perform controlled burns or prescribed burns.

Done annually, the program is designed to alleviate much of the build up of dead leaves, undergrowth, branches, trees etc. that at the peak of wildfire season can create massive, fast moving fires.

Prescribed burns help reduce forest fire risk before prime wildfire season, which typically begins in early spring when fallen leaves, branches and twigs are abundant. In addition, spring is likely to be dry, windy and warm. These weather conditions coupled with lack of new leaf growth makes forest debris more susceptible to the drying effects of wind and sun.

For motorists, PLEASE SLOW DOWN if you are around a smokey area, as these fires tend to drastically reduce visibility which can be a danger to yourself, other motorists and  the added   multiple  agencies working along side road ways.

If you are unsure wether it is a controlled burn or an actual fire you can call 9-1-1 or 877-WARN-DEP(877-927-6337) and they will be able to let you know if they will be dispatching appropriate resources.
